I can’t believe I haven’t blogged about this yet as it was the best moment of my life ever!!!!!
But yeah on friday Danielle and I went to ‘St Os Fest’ at Newcastle Uni SU where various bands from the North East were dressing up as various other bands/artists and covering their songs for charity. The Chapman Family were Kiss, Little Comets were Bon Jovi, Field Music were Fleetwood Mac, Frankie & The Heartstrings were David Bowie and The Futureheads were Queen. It was a really brilliant night anyway, but Paul Smith of Maximo Park (my favourite band) was also doing a DJ set which made it even better!
Danielle and I were extremely drunk so the whole night was just bloody hilarious, but then after Paul finished his DJ set we asked the bouncer if we could go round the barrier and talk to him and he was like yeah whatever so WE DID. And I told him that we were the girls who owed him 8 quid from the Manchester show and that we were the ones who waited for them outside XFM winter wonderland and that we’d driven to Newcastle all the way from Halifax and he had a look on his face like ‘These girls are really weird stalkers’ but he was still really awesome to us.
We chatted to him for a bit about how much we loved Maximo Park and told him that his DJ set was awesome, and then Jaff from The Futureheads (another of my fave bands) came over to chat to Paul and we were like CAN WE GET A PICTURE WITH YOU BOTH OMG DYING and they were like yeah sure so that was awesome. And then Jaff walked away pmsl.
But, as aforementioned, we were REALLY drunk so we were basically cheesy as fuck. I told them that their music had changed my life and they asked me whether I was deaf! (and whether it had changed for the worse!) And then Danielle asked him how he would feel if he had met Arthur Russell (his favourite artist) and he said something along the lines of “I imagine it would feel a bit like you young girls feel now” and I said TIMES THAT BY THREE which is a really specific number so idk why I said that.
And then we told him that his tweets were really poetic even when they were ‘dirty’ which was the completely wrong word to use and I actually could have died when I remembered in the morning but at the time I was so drunk that I didn’t even care. But at the time he was like EH? And I was like yeah, not the right word to use by any means.
AND THEN I ASKED HIM IF I COULD HUG HIM AND IT WAS THE BEST HUG EVER AND I ACTUALLY NEVER EVER WANTED TO LET GO. Then we had to go because the bouncer was about to kick us in the face but he said HAVE A SAFE DRIVE BACK TO HALIFAX and he remembered that we lived in Halifax and omg.
Then Danielle and I just walked out of the room very calmly and laid on the floor in the SU bar for about 5 minutes. But then we calmed down and danced the night away in Newcastle.
Best. Night. Of. My. Life.
(Paul I love you)
Oh. My. Lord. I have NO words for this. That just sounds so perfect. The gig, the bands, the Paul Smith. The meeting of Paul. If I met him I’d probably cry with joy. From my obsessive tweeting and two mid-gig shutouts to me he must know my stalkerish self
